We are all culprits of judging a book by its cover sometimes right?!… we think gym’s and exercise establishments are no different, we get judged too! We have reputations of being ‘hard out’, intimidating or even scary. But why, when some of us are the complete opposite. 9 times out of 10, gym’s are none of these and the people who want to believe these ‘beliefs’ need just a little bit of guidance and knowledge to help them understand what actually goes on behind the doors.
Here are a few comments we’ve heard over the years about Beyond Fitness to give you an idea of how we are being judged…
- “I thought you were a specialised ‘rehab’ gym”
- Sam: “you should come along to Beyond if you’re looking to get into the gym” Sam’s mate: “No way, you guys are way too fit and hard out for me”
- “I don’t want to join because I don’t want to be embarrassed when I can’t do an exercise”
So because we like to be very straight up and honest, here is what we would reply to the above (given the opportunity)…
“I thought you were a ‘rehab’ gym”
We may come across as a ‘specialty gym’ as we have an in house Physio service, however Beyond Fitness is an all-round, health and wellbeing establishment where you can improve both your fitness and health through our group classes, personal training and physiotherapy.
Sam: “you should come along to Beyond if you’re looking to get into the gym” Sam’s mate: “No way, you guys are way too fit and hard out for me”
Sam’s mate has not done their research and is making some pretty big assumptions. Whether you are starting your well-being journey from scratch, dabbling in some exercise or you are already fit and healthy and just want a change of scenery, our trainers are very talented at catering a class for ALL abilities. We understand each individual are on their own health and fitness journey, therefore its our mission to make your experience personal to you.
“I don’t want to join because I don’t want to be embarrassed when I can’t do something”
We are very aware that gyms can be a daunting place in the beginning and we understand that some people wanting/needing to come to the gym are starting from scratch or feel they are not skilled enough. This is why before going anywhere near group classes, we have a 1-to-1 sit down to find out exactly where you are at in terms of your health, injuries, concerns and goals. During this 1-to-1 we also go through a series of fundamental exercises that will equip you for going into group classes and help you feel a little less like the ‘new kid’.
So this is a wee message for those of you judging us from the outside…
By assuming that we are ‘hard out’, intimidating or scary, you are misreading us – in fact, sorry if we have given you that impression. With our hands on our hearts, we can honestly say that at Beyond we see our members as a family who care. What we have going on is a little community of people who respect and help each other on our individual health and fitness journeys.
To be more specific, our philosophy around gym training goes a little like this;
We welcome everyone. We treat everyone as an individual (unwanted injuries and all). We deliver high quality classes in a small, supportive, catering environment. We believe in these small classes so that you get the personal attention you require to improve, make gains and enjoy your fitness journey. Not to mention that we have a good old laugh, don’t take ourselves too seriously and relish in the atmosphere that our Beyond Community create.
